BUT SIR IN KD TRIPATHI, IT IS WRITTEN DAT...VALPROATE IS D DRUG OF CHOICE OF ABSENCE SEIZURES IN ADULTS AND ETHOSUXIMIDE IS DRUG OF CHOICE ONLY IN CASE OF CHILDREN...PLS CLEAR MY DOUBT
ReplyDelete-- Ethosuximide does not cause idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity and hence is preferred especially in children.
Delete-- Valproate has been shown to be more effective than ethosuximide for atypical absence seizures. (Ref: Engel J Jr. Seizures and Epilepsy. Philadelphia: F.A. Davis Company)
-- Atypical Absence Seizures usually :
1. occur in children.
2. last > 10 seconds.
3. gradually start and stop than typical.
4. not precipitated by hyperventilation.
-- When absence seizures are ass. with GTCS - Valproate is preferred choice.
